Northumberland County Commissioners Stop AlliedBarton Deal To Prevent The Poor Treatment of Guards

In the past two weeks, Swarthmore College student activists raised concern for the way that AlliedBarton treats it’s employees. Today, the Northumberland (PA) County Commissioners reversed their plans to outsource their security guard jobs to this notoriously anti-worker employer.

It was a cost-savings decision that would save the county about $56,000 a year.

But on Tuesday, the commissioners agreed to table approval of the contract.

“We want to look at the implications for the county and the workers a little closer,” Chairman Frank Sawicki said.

Added Commissioner Kurt Masser, “We want to be fair to the employees.”

The county’s security department is unionized, Allied Barton has been the focus of nationally-watched struggles with labor, including a struggle to establish a union local at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where guards are employed by Allied Barton.

Guards at the art museum have voted to join a union, but Allied Barton has appealed that decision to the National Labor Relations Board. Guards there complain of inadequate pay and insufficient training.
