Elections Announced For PHA And DRWC (Firing Averted)!

This has been a crazy week.

Later on I will post a quick report about how the Labor Day Eve Worship Service went and the Reform Immigration for America meeting with Mayor Nutter went.

For now, I am glad to announce that the PSOU has scheduled the election for the security guards at the Philadelphia Housing Authority Bloomberg Projects is scheduled for October 1.

A security guard, Eric Betts bravely testified in front of the National Labor Relations Board against the Scottland Yard’s efforts to remove him and one other guard from the election proceedings.

His testimony convinced the board that he was eligible to vote which cleared the way to set up the election. Betts asked the Scottland Yard lawyer, “So how can we move our union election forward?”

On the river front, we also have some good news.

The DWRC manager had far refused to work with the guards on their changed shifts. This situation was going to force our union leader, Jim Walsh, to miss his shift on Saturday and possibly get fired.

He and Luis Parilla planned a job action to confront the manager and ask her if a firing would be the consequence.

The show of solidarity of three of the six union members won out and the manager changed his shift.

Next the workers plan to push back on the companies efforts to sub-contract their jobs, a recent trend that is also illegal.

We have scheduled their union election for October 8.
