All Of Philly’s Recent Economic Growth In Low Waged Jobs? Yup.

Jake Blumgart reports this week on a post on American City.org that restaurants and hospitality providers pretty much added 20% of all new jobs in the last year…

“Philadelphia lost 8,700 jobs in the last year…. “Leisure and Hospitality” added 2,000. And while any job growth is better than none, these three growing industries share something in common: They usually don’t pay well.”

How can you have an economic recovery if workers are too broke to spend any money?

Obviously, you can’t.

Now is a perfect time to raise the minimum wage.

Broke people spend a higher percentage of their disposable income than the wealthy.

Every penny earned by a low-waged workers is immediately returned to the local economy.

Wages earned by servers and dishwashers will not end up hanging out in the Cayman Island’s.
